2nd gear rattle!

OK, e30 shift knobs are prone to falling off now and again, but this time it caused some damage. I down-shifted into 2nd, heel toe and all, but the knob flew off, and my gear was left in between 2nd and neutral. i quickly throw the knob to the side and sift completely into 2nd. However, this apparently caused some damage, because now when im in 2nd there is some rattling when i push the shift knob to the left. The rattle is consistent with the rpms' im in.
If i shift very carefully, there is little to no noise, but this is not a problem i want to ignore.

Anyone know what is wrong here? If anyone can shine some light on this rattle noise, it would be appreciated

The first thing I'd do would be to get the car up in the air and have a look at the shifter, transmission & engine mounts, and guibo. If they are all good, there might be a problem in the transmission. But before going for a trans swap I'd replace those parts if they have wear.

I know the shift knob falling off wouldn't be the reason for whatever is happening. Is the rattle noise more of a gear grind noise? Sorry for the troubles.
