Swap in longer bolts and lower the front subframe an inch. You'll be able to get the top bolts by yourself with only a wobble bar and a long extension.
Dropping the subframe and pulling the IM, huh? Interesting approach.
I also have the habit of diving into projects with more confidence than know how. Since you're most of the way through a job I just finished and way past done with a job I'd like to do one day (M50 swap), how do you think the two compare?
Obviously the motor swap is harder, but how much harder? On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being "So complicated I pissed my pants and almost towed the car to pay a professional finish" I would give my clutch job with seals a 5.
The motor swap is a lot more in-depth than a simple transmission replacement, you need all your ducks in a row: brake booster/master cyl, driveshaft/tranny brace, wiring adapter, everything you're going to replace "while you're in there" (I did LCAs/bushings, steering rack/tie rods, shifter bushings, lines and hoses, radiator, tstat/water pump, belts and tensioners/pulleys to name a few). I did a lot of research and then just dove in as that's pretty much how I've done most of my jobs. Really it's tough for me to judge in terms of how "hard" something is, to me it never really seems all that "hard," just requires patience and perseverance. If a tranny swap is a 5, though, an M50 swap is probably about an 8, give or take. It certainly is a lot nicer to get the powertrain out of the car to work on it.
Regarding the motor swap though, I will say this: After doing something that in-depth, I have tons more confidence working on this car. I feel like I know it inside and out and have no real reservation doing any job I have the tools for, and you probably won't either if you do something like that. If I was unfamiliar with the transmission and engine and hadn't done an engine swap on this car I would not have had the confidence to tow it back home instead of to a shop when my trans took a dump.

It's super easy that way.
Hmm, I'll try giving that a shot to get the tranny the rest of the way off. What are the subframe bolts, M10x1.5?
