Buy the correct transmission. This isn't my first rodeo.

Yes Matt, I did read your post. Has no one honestly tried the G240/M20 install? It appears that the G240 has been used on an S50, so perhaps it wouldn't be that bad. The tranny doesn't need to hold a whole hell of a lot of torque, so it well might work, if someone knows what fly/clutch/pp/release fork/bearing are needed.

let me check the junkyards. i could probably get a transmission with everything for it for about 200. if you picked it up it would stay there but if i have to come up there it would be a little more for gas

I think the upullit's here have all been converted to we pull its, and charge you more. I suppose its time to call around and see what I can dig up. Ugh. Jeff, I might take you up on that.

If it fits a 24V motor properly (which it does) but when you use a G260 behind a 24V it tilts 10 degrees and requires oddball engine mounting and tranny mounting, doesn't it make sense that using a M20 on a 240 would tilt that 240 10 degrees and cause the need for a custom tranny mount?

Since the M50 is a drop in install in her car, why not find one of those?

Because the M20 is cheaper. I'm picking up a low mile parts car that happens to have an automatic. An M50 swap would be ~$1500-2000, the M20 swap, with a G260, will be ~$500. And lets be honest, there is really no point in putting an M50 in, I'm not looking for big power numbers, just a reliable car. 120-130whp is fine. The other option is repairing the M42, which is more expensive than swapping in an M20, so it seems logical to put an M20 in. lol. And, custom tranny mounts aren't a hassle, I can fab one up pretty easily. I was just hoping someone knew which clutch/fly combo was required.

I bet the M42 stuff would work just fine.

Wait, how the hell is an M50 w/accessories, harness and DME gonna be $1500?

Her car is an M42 manual, right?

Yes its an M42 manual. A decent condition M50 complete is ~$1k, much cheaper and I'll have to go through the motor to fix things up. Then there are extras, like a ZF, clutch, etc.

8 bent valves, 3 bad chain pulleys, tensioner, etc. $931.66 is my rough estimate for the repair. It'll be cheaper to put in a 6 cylinder vs repair the M42.

What is your idea of "decent condition"?

Sub 5% leakdown, minimal oil leaks (will be fixed prior to dropping motor in, so less is cheaper/easier).

                              why not find another m42?

                              or a g260

Finding another M42 is an option, but its likely that I'd have a more reliable and better motor by fixing this one, than getting another one.. We shall see what I end up doing. If I get the M20 (Its a bigger IF, the lady who owns the donor car didn't like my offer.. I don't feel a car that has massive body damage and bad wheel bearings is worth a grand let alone $500.. Maybe $200-300 tops) I think I'll source a G260. Or its back to fixing the M42. M42's are good motors, its just a lot of money repairing it for such a gutless engine.
