What is this?

I pulled the engine and trans from my car, and noticed that there was a plastic piece on top that looked broken. There is a C-clip holding it in, when I pulled the clip it would only go into the output shaft, it would not pull out. I checked RealOEM and did a search on here, but didnt see any descriptions. Need to know the following:

1. What is it called
2. How important is it
3. How expensive is it :(

I honestly couldn't even guess, doesnt appear to have fluid, I dont even know if I broke it when I removed the engine...

Is this an automatic transmission? On my tranny that's exactly where the shifter linkage goes. Perhaps they used similar housings?

#17 ventilation valve.

its a guess cuz i dont know what kind of e30 its from. the pic shows auto tranny from 91 E30 325i. looks like the same piece though, except broken.

Yea its an auto, but the linkage runs down the side of the trans on this one.

Yea, its a 91 E30 325i vert. Any idea of its function?

I just pulled the same tranny and I think it is just a mount/vent. Probably had a black rubber cap on top.
