Did a clutch job, reinstalling driveshaft, 1" gap?

    Hey guys,
I am putting together the e30 I got (with no transmission/clutch installed). Its together, runs (which is great), but I have hit a strange spot. When I went to install the driveshaft, I could not get it close enough to the guibo/flex disc! There is a 1" gap. I loosened the center bearing, pulled, and it does not want to slide forward. Is there a trick to this? Do I need to jack up the diff or loosen something else?

    Thanks!

It is very common for the dust/water seal under the drive shaft gland nut to disintegrate with time and almost lock the drive shaft halves. The best fix is to separate the drive shaft halves, throughly clean the splines, lube with chassis grease and reassemble with a new seal. This can be done with the drive shaft in the car, but it is a lot easier with the drive shaft removed.

As Todd Black 88 suggested, might it be that you have an auto drive shaft?
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

The driveshaft is a 5spd, and is to my knowledge org to the car.

I will check what you suggest jlevie, thanks!

          Mark the driveshaft before separating.

When rejoining match the marks, and then try one spline off in each direction to verify that you have the correct spline to exactly align the U-joints. It's easiest to reassemble removed from the car so that you can check the U-joint against the floor rather than using a short bubble level.
