Think I diagnosed the clunking noise...

on my 89 325is w/5 speed: I've had a clunk whenever engaging or disengaging the clutch. I can make it less noticeable if I try and be easy on the clutch. Never happens going over bumps. No vibration at all. Sounds like it's from back near the diff. Finally put her up on stands, had the wife get in and start it up, put it in gear and push the clutch in and out while I was underneath. The noise pretty much seems to be coming from the rear u-joint, but could it also be coming from the diff? From what I've read, I'm thinking it's the u-joint, but then again after reading similar threads I've realized there are like twenty different diagnosis for this issue and no definitive, easy way to do it. I hate that.

If it does happen to be the u-joint, seems most people fork out over $400 for a new driveshaft. A friend here told me about a shop locally that will replace the joint with one with a zerk that can be greased and do it for $135. I called the place and talked with the guy who says he's done these quite a few times before. What do you guys think?

Since machining is required to remove the the old u-joints, the drive shaft has to be balanced afterwards. If this shop can do that, the results should be fine.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

By the description, are you also thinking it's the u-joint and not the diff?
