Chattering sound when downshifting to 2nd?

Hi, so whenever i shift from 1st to 2nd gear there is a chattering sound, but it goes away as soon as im in second. Also, if im in second and push the shifter down the sound is there, but as soon as i let it go it goes away.

The previous owner installed a z4 short shifter... Could this be the culprit?

One more problem is, i get a little chattering sound when in reverse...

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I just acquired this car, 88 325is..Pics to come:)

Get the car up in the air and check to see if the selector rod is interfering with the drive shaft.
