you can run the VINs on Carfax, but the best way (in case one's been swaped) is to look at each diff

the LSDs will have a tag on them that starts with "S"

    ie: s373 or s410 or s293...

do a burn out and see if it leaves 1 mark or 2 marks.

jack the car up at the diff, spin one wheel forward, if the other goes in the opposite direction, you have an OPEN diff.

a tag can be switched out, it's nice to make sure it's really an LSD.

Or jack up one side of the rear of the car. With the car in neutral and ebrake off, try to spin the tire. If it's open, it will spin. If it's an LSD, it won't spin since the other tire is on the ground.

I live on a really steep hill in Seattle; barely make it to the top when it's wet out. I thought an LSD would help so I look at the tag on the diff cover to see what I have and it reads S2.93. So now I'm thinking I have an LSD in need of repair. Rebuild? New Clutches? I jacked up the rear and turned a tire forward by hand. The other tire spins the same direction at the same speed. I started the engine and let the tires spin in first gear at idle. Both spin in the same direction at the same speed. Then I grabbed a tire by hand and was able to stop it from spinning while the other sped up twice as fast. I held it this way for 15 seconds.

So is this enough info to confirm an LSD in need of repair?

If I had someone open the throttle during this experiment would this LSD have kicked in then?

The car is a 1986 eta sedan 5speed. 335K on the clock. I'm the second owner the car was babied it's whole life.

Sounds like worn out clutches. I had the same thing with my 3.73 lsd, acted like an open diff.

I opted to get a mint condition diff off ebay rather than rebuild mine, because new clutches and dog ear plates cost nearly as much as a good condition used diff.

put last 7 of VIN here

It will tell you what factory options are. But as mentioned it could have been removed or swapped.
