    89 325i convertible transmission replacement

Hi there, Im a currently semi-broke canadian law student on vancouver island in desperate need of some assistance. while home over easter break I purchased an 89 325i convertible 5speed for a mere 1000 dollars!!!! The transmission is clearly in rough shape and needs replacement sooner than later. I found a 93 318is e36 ZF 5 speed transmission which has just come out of an 87 325e. the seller is insisting to me that it will easily bolt right into my 89 325i convertible. he is only asking 100 dollars so the price is right but I am hesitant because from what I have read I will need to replace the drive shaft? I don't have a lot of money and thus I am looking for cost efficiency. I wouldn't be driving the car much on the highway so the ZF transmission gearing seems very appealing to me. any advice would be greatly appreciated! thanks in advance!

That makes no sense. Only Getrag transmissions were used in E30's, to the best of my knowledge. While ZF from and E36 might fit an M20B25, I'd bet on the drive shaft not being the same. A good used late model Getrag 260 should run $200-300 (US) and would be an exact swap.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

the guy obviously had placed the zf tranny into his 325e as an after market upgrade some time ago. I have read online that the zf tranny mates perfectly with an 87-88 bmw 325e but that there may be some problems with attaching it to my 325i. this essentially what I am asking about. will I have to get a new drive shaft (or any other parts for that matter) if I want to install the ZF tranny into my car. he only wants 100 dollars for it.

I briefly recall Mr. Bentley saying that there were a few ZF trannies in e30s. I could be wrong though.

is there anyone out there who actually knows about the comparability between a 325i and a zf manual tranny?
