    ES Vs I Same Tranny

    i have this 86 Es that was a nice clutch and tranny..flyweel
    and my 87 i is going out.. minus well swap them out if they are possible.
    same shift linkage>?

    You can swap the ES parts into the IS, but the ES flywheel is a good bit heavier. Also the ES transmission may not have the mounting lugs for the aluminum shifter in the IS. Meaning that you'd have to swap in the sheet metal shifter from the ES.
    The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

      To add onto what was said above. If it does not have provisions for the later model shifter there is a bolt on bracket that can be had through bmw. Also for future reference, you can swap an eta tranny onto an "i" engine, but vise versa due to the holes for the refernence sensor in the bellhousing. The late models didn't all come with the holes drilled.

        k. Got it. so its a nope. ill grab one at the junk when i got some spare time.. BTW also would i be able to swap sparkplugwires / dizzy cap w/ es and i? mine copper is waco

          The plug wires are different for an M20B27 and an M20B25. The I/IS engines have a cylinder id sensor on the number six plug wire that isn't present on an E/ES engine. The distributor cap and rotor are interchangeable.
