    Rear Tranny Seal Leaking

The rear of my tranny is leaking pretty bad. I have a bunch of stuff to do under there anyhow, (guibo, driveshaft support bearing, ssk) so I should do this at the same time.

Has anyone done this themselves before or is it a shop job? Do I need any special tools to change the seal?

Also, does someone have the part numbers to order, I just cannot seem to find them on my ETK.

    Thanks.

Yeah, its pretty easy to change. You will need a thin wall socket to remove the output flange bolt. I forget what size it is exactly, but i want to say 32mm.

Excellent. Since we'll be swapping out the output flange, the seal shouldn't be too much more work. :D

Jordan be da man. Now, to think of something to repay him for his soon-to-be generosity...

Do you guys have Sears there? If so, I'm sure the tool department could order you one, if they don't already have it. If not, try some auto repair shops, and see if you can get one from their Snap-On rep (or whatever distributor they use).

You don't just "find" a thin wall socket in this size.

You get a normal impact socket, and grind down the face.

Snap on makes a 30mm thin walled deep socket. Good luck finding a truck that has one with them, though.

Yeah, we have Sears and Snap-On reps as well. I will check around. Jordan said just grind down the face. Pardon my ignorance, but you mean grind down the outside of the socket until it fits? Sounds like more work than changing the tranny seal. ;)

Thanks guys, I will look around. If I do happen to come across some commercially, I will let you know.

                        Cheers.

Rear Tranny Seal Leak - Any other parts I need?

I was just reviewing the posts on this and noticed a couple of guys mentioned changing the output flange... could that be what is leaking as well?

I would just hate to pull all this apart, change the seal only to find that the flange is the cause or part of the cause of the leak.

                          Anyone??

                          Thanks.

The output flange doesnt leak. The rear seal seals against it, and that is what leaks.

Replace the seal, its like $3. Find a socket at some auto or home tool store, grind it down and be done with it.

                              Thanks Jordan

Thanks Jordan. That will be next week's project.

I also finally got the parts for my z4 3.0 short shifter. So while I am under there, I plan to change the guibo, center support bearing, tranny mounts, and the shifter and all the shift bushings.

                              Should be a busy weekend.

                              Thanks.

What do people like for tranny fluid? Redline?
