Scroll up assclown - you said you were gonna do that about a month or so ago. Nice job, way to let down your children. Some dad you are!

    Anyways.

Ken, I had the sheetmetal console in my 85. I replaced the front pair of mounts, the rear mount, and the lever mounting cup pieces. I used a Z4 3.0 lever, and it was still sloppy. What did I miss?

The parts car has some form of short shifter in it, and it's hard as a rock. I'm gonna steal the lever, but I'm afraid there's more to its stiffness...

You're a dirty, dirty man, Sean.

I now understand what I'll be looking for at the tranny side. Two triangular brackets with holes to mount the front end of the aluminum shift carrier.

Now, how about the rear? :)

I take it you read over the changes I made to your quote :)

It's not like you have anything better to do. Cept maybe hit on a cousin or pick some potatoes.

You have extensively detailed pics of the front of the shaft and the tranny mount, but nothing for the rear? Strange, I always pictured you as an ass man...

ok here's my issues. I'm trying to update to the alum. carrier while i'm replacing the tranny. The transmission that I have will allow for the alum carrier to mount but the problem that I have is the bushing that the selector rod attaches too at the back of the tranny (see pic 0383 in sean's post) that bushing is too wide to allow the selector rod for the alum carrier to fit to get the bitch clip on. What have you guys done to solve this? Did you just replace that bushing with one from a newer car?

              Thanks,
              Tom

PS: and yes I realize I've brought a dead thread back to life but there isn't really any other thread that discusses this topic when using a search.

Can you just shave it down to fit? I've got the parts at home to do this as well, I'll have to check it out tonight if I have the same issue...

EDIT: sorry, i misunderstood your issue, I haven't gotten that far yet...

There are two styles of selector rod and forward joints. The newer style joint is symmetrical, with the pivot pin the same length on both ends of the rod. The older style joint is wider and asymmetrical. Both rod types are the same at the rear / shift lever end.

New style shift rod, with small transmission-end pivot pin / arm:
Forward connection: 10mm diameter, joint 20.6mm long, pin 23mm to groove.

You can update by replacing both the shifter connecting rod and joint at once.

                    25-11-7-501-309 Gear Sel Rod Joint (-9/89), 36.56/31.08 MTC-$20.99
Wider joint matches old shift rod
                    25-11-7-503-525 Gear Sel Rod Joint (+9/89) , 36.56/31.08 MTC-$12.21
                    (was 25-11-1-220-198)
Joint matches width of shift lever, shift rod is symmetrical

Don't forget to put in new cheap parts:
                    25-11-1-220-439, Yellow washers 16x10x0.9mm, 0.51
25-11-1-220-379, Spring clip for shift linkage pins, 0.70
25-11-1-434-194 Felt/foam "washer" (oil pad) for shift linkage $0.43

somebody should find a way to mount the shifter directly to the transmission, instead of a half ass half on the transmission, and half to the body....all it does is cause problems

Not to bring the old thread back from the dead, but I am having some problems with my shifter (hits the console in R, a lot of play etc) and have already replaced all the usual parts that wear out other than the console, rod and shifter itself.

In your case with the z4 3.0 lever and the metal console, how did it fit ? Could you please tell me if it dropped right in, in place of the oem shifter ? I would like to order a new console tomorrow and a new shifter, and just want to make sure I order the best option and do it once.

kinda tryin to figure this out myself right now. My car is an 89 and it came with a manual transmission and it has the sheet metal shifter console. Shouldnt this car have the aluminum carrier?? Is it likely if it has this style shifter that the trans has been replaced/?? Any help would be great.

Couple more parts to order and I am going to have a 100% new shifter, with all new parts. I got my fingers crossed..
