Is this an easy autotragic fix?

Hey everybody, I just picked up an 89 auto vert and the tranny is having issues. The symptoms are as follows:

The car when cold will go into both drive and reverse and move just fine. I can get the car to drive for about two or three blocks and then it feels like there is no power whatsoever going to the rear wheels and I can only coast to a stop. This will happen much quicker if I get the revs high on the motor. When stopped after this happens the car if left running will not engage into drive or reverse at all. Now here is the weird part...if I turn the car off and let it sit for a couple of minutes I can then restart the motor and the tranny will again engage into drive and I can get it to go again for a couple of blocks.

Tranny fluid is up to the proper level but it does look a bit contaminated and I am sure the tranny could use a fluid and filter change. Is this the problem or is my tranny toast? Thanks in advance for any advice or solutions!

Start with a filter change and see if it gets better, you can probably tell by the deposits in the pan if it is failing.

      hmmm that doesn't sound good.

A lot of guys recommend against transmission 'flushes' since there is a chance that a deposit somewhere could break loose and end up in a valve body or something, causing more harm than good. But in your case since it's already undriveable, I'd have it flushed and a new filter put in.
