    Is my diff locked?

I have an 88 325is that when it's up on the hoist, it seems to turn the other wheel (on the other side of the car) at the same rate, in the same direction. Kinda like i have a locker rear diff. Is this common? I've never had a car that does that, my 86 es didn't even have that. Is this an issue I should be concerned with? As I understand it, my car should have a limited slip diff.

Also, when doing turns at a low speed (u turns, etc) the car seems to have a fair amount of drivetrain noise (nothing major, just whirring noises and such) coming from the diff. area.

    any input is greatly appreciated.

    thanks

if you have a lsd yes it should turn the same direction as the ther rear wheel. as for the noise, try changing your diff fluid out for something with lsd additive.

I have the same thing on my 4.10 LSD, the 2 rear wheels turn at identical speeds all the time, beautiful for drifting and sideway action but extremely dangerous and crazy when i get on the water, and too much rubber burning on dragging and making me lose lots of time spinning the wheels. the mechanic told me that it's a 4.10 LSD that has been extra stuffed (i'm not sure of the correct term for that) in order to increase the locking. The car is in the garage today and i'm swapping into a 3.70 internals and will decrease the locking. once the car is done with all the repairs in 3 days i'll let you know if the process of decreasing the locking has succeeded or not (which will allow me to know for sure if the internals were stuffed for more lock or has been locked through welding).

someone probably just put different clutch packs in it to make it lock more. It shouldnt be dragging a tire though... hmm. maybe your's is welded?

This is what clutch pack diffs do. You have an is, it's supposed to come with a clutch pack diff.
