1/2 -1 inch lateral play in driveshaft when pushed, pulled. CSB?

From under the car, up on jacks and ramps, I push the driveshaft side to side (latereally) and theres about an inch of play. It actually moves that much.

When I accelerate from a stop, I frequently get a thumping behind and between the front seats, from the tranny tunnel. Or so that is how it sounds. I also have heard a howling from the rear worse when turning right, so Im thinking thats a L rear wheel bearing.

Is this the CSB? U joints look ok from what I can see, except 1 of the 4 bolts that attach the rear ujoint of the DS to the diff flange is gone. The play in the driveshaft seems to confirm CSB for the thumping. I think.

    Ideas anyone?

    Thanks...

Yes that points directly at a bad CSB.
How are you able to pull on the d-shaft and not see the csb though?
Is your heatshield still installed or not?

Heat shield still there Teager, and I cant see shit. But it moves when I push against it about and inch. I wonder is the missing diff flange bolt the cause, or do I need new ujoint and or DS also?

Looks like the guibo has a crack as well.

BTW Teager, know anyone good for doing an install on the guibo, CSB, trans output seal and diff seal?

You could also get side to side play if the retaining bolts for the CSB mounting bracket are loose. This obviously comes to mind because you mention missing a bolt at the rear end as well. Having just done my complete drive-line I can say it's not that tough of a diy. At the very least I'd pull the shield, replace the lost bolts/nuts and make sure everything is properly tightened to see if that fixes the issue. Good luck.

That sounds reasonbable. Problem is I cant get under the car well with my current jack and stands/ ramp. If I had a lift no doubt it would be very doable. Might just have to take to an Indy mech.

But man I hate to for sure. So I might try your advice first. Maybe to the guibo CSB.

I had the exact same thumping sound from between the seats which sounded like it was right under the handbrake console.
It turned out to be the CSB, and subsequently a bad driveshaft. Not sure if driving around with the driveshaft thumping caused it to go bad or if it was already bad in the first place, but I ended up replacing both. :D
