I had to drop the transmission at least an inch to be able to remove the
bitch clip. It was hitting the top of the transmission tunnel and preventing
me from fully disengage the clip.

Like late racer said it is more than ideal to at least unbolt the front of the
driveshaft to access the shifter assembly. It is probably possible to do it
with the drive shaft in but small hands/tools would be required.

Also I had a vibration damper on the driveshaft that I needed to be removed
to swap in a shorter throw lever. so the drive shaft had to be removed.

I'm not sure if I actually have the damper on mine. I spent enough time under there working on the oil control valve but I didn't think to look. In fact I'm only assuming that I have the aluminum shifter based on the year, so I could be in for a surprise when I get under there.

To bad by 2 1/2 daughter isn't old enough yet to get her tiny hands in there yet, then I could just put her to work :) Wouldn't have to worry about my big meat-paws.

I know this thread is a little old
I just did this job with OEM parts minus the rear bushing (im stupid and lazy)
Its still really sloopy and soft.
If you do do this, buy something besides oem.
I could not get the flip up clip off. Took me hours. I droped the tranny about and inch. Thats all it would drop with the rear tranny mounts un bolted.
Giant pain in the ass and almost no gain.

it makes no sense why you did a half ass job of not replacing ALL parts.

The OE parts are fine and will restore the shifter to like new condition, but you do have to replace all of the wear parts and that means getting the bitch clip off.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
