Stuck in 4th gear?

Hi all, about a week ago I was noticing a huge amount of play in my shift lever in gear. In order to get into reverse, 1st, 3rd, and 5th gear, I'd have to really force it or it would pop out of gear, 2nd and 4th were fine. About half an hour later the car wouldn't even go into neutral (stayed in 4th). I bought the tranny used and I'm hoping it only consists of a few bushings or the shift linkage itself disconnected? Any input would be much appreciated! :)

The first thing to do is to check the shift linkage. A not uncommon failure, which can cause the symptoms described, is a failure of the selector rod.
