if you are still using the m20 then I would deff say stick with the 260. Its easier to bolt on and it is stronger. You can change the gearing with the diff.

The 240 has a shorter 1-3rd gear by a small bit. It was designed to help give the M42 some "get up and go" since it lacked the liters for low end torque. So if you want the added acceleration, go for it. But with the 4.10, the 260 is probably a better choice.

If you do decided to do the 240 swap, you need a euro E30 320 throw out bearing, m42 drive shaft, and transmission cross brace (not 100% on the cross brace). The tranny will sit a bit offset and the smaller bolts won't line up.

The euro E30 320 had a 2 liter M20B20 in it. Again, the 240 was chosen for quicker "get up and go". But in an attempt to adapt it, they made offset motor mounts. IE if you don't use them, your shifter will sit off ~10 degrees.

IMO stick with the 260. Besides, if it's just leaking oil, fix it... It's cheaper than getting a new tranny.

            Status: HG repair. 488wtq though!

no overdrive? f that noise. You'd have to have a tall ass diff. Going highway speeds would be hell with a 4.10

0.81:1 5th? Isn't that normally considered overdrive? I was amused the ZF didn't have overdrive but most E30s ran 3.73s and above while the average M3 has a 3.23.

I was talking about the 250.

you can buy the offset motor/trans mounts and it'll fix it up good.
