    M20 Clutch and Flywheel Parts

    Hey everyone;

I'm about to put an order in for some M20 parts. My throwout bearing is cooked and so I figure if I'm going to drop the tranny, I better fix everything I can. I searched around the forums, but couldn't find the answers to all my questions.

I just have a few questions about parts needed.

    1. Clutch Kit
I'm ordering a clutch kit from either Pelican Parts or Bavauto.

Here is the Pelican Parts ones:
Transmission & Clutch auto parts for BMW 3-Series E30 (1983-1991): Clutch Super Kits, Clutch Super Kits and other parts related to Clutch & Flywheel

The clutch kit for my 03/1987 325i would be...which. I called the guys there and they weren't 100% sure. "The boss isn't in."

    Here is the Bavauto.com ones:

Same car, just wondering if the $100 price difference is worth getting all the extra bits and replacing them as well.

    2. The Flywheel
I don't know what my flywheel looks like, but I'm wondering for my car, if it is the dual-mass or not. I'm 80% sure it is, from what I have read, but can't be too sure.

My car is a March 1987 325i, 5 speed manual.

Should I grab a new one? Just to be safe, I wouldn't mind spending a little money to get a lighter/single mass flywheel in the car.

    3. The shifter BITS
My shifter is really notchy and uneven, and every so often when its really cold out, doesn't like shifting into first. Is there a certain group of bushing or something that I can buy to refresh this part?

I found this kit through Pelican Parts.

    Is there someone better/cheaper?

THANKS to anyone to takes a little time to give me a couple answers.

    Cheers!

The extra parts are highly desirable and most are are necessary. So the extral $100 will be money well spent.

Your engine will have a single mass flywheel. The odds are that it will need to be surfaced. So factor that time and cost into the project.

The shifting problems sound more like a transmission or fluid problem than a shifter problem. But while the transmission is out you have the perfect opportunity to replace all of the bushings in the shifter. That job is rather a pain with the transmission in the car.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Ok great, but the parts I have shown are all the right parts?

Could I use this for a swap into an m42? to replace the dual mass flywheel?

If your going to a single mass flywheel, you do need the single mass clutch. I do know that much.

              I thought 87 325i's were single mass?

And that's the best price I've seen for such a complete kit. Thanks for the link. You definitely need everything in that kit. My regret the last time I did tranny work was not putting in a fresh shifter/output seals. Also check your trans mounts and if they look like they're falling apart change em.

As for shifting, I personally think that pelican kit is a waste of money. There's no reason to replace stuff that just doesn't really matter. In the end the only shifting parts that I ended up replacing were the bushing in the carrier that attaches at the top of the transmission (Delrin bushings from akg), and a new bushing for the shift joint. If you still have the oem shifter you'd probably benefit from the nylon cup too.

Ya, I really think that's a great price too. I got the shifter refresh kit too, mine is feeling really sloppy and figure it'll be easy when the tranny comes out (no homo) for other work.
