Selector Rod extends a lot from new Shift Coupler Bushing

I bought a brand new Shift Coupler Bushing from BMA(circled in the picture) and the Selector Rod extends a lot from where it goes in so the circlip doesn't hold the thing tightly, my red arrow points at the part that is shorter on the new piece than on the old one, do I have the wrong part or am I missing something? This is such BS, I wanna put my driveshaft in and get my car running!

You have the wrong part. Some of the selector bushings are longer on one side (like yours is supposed to be). You can either get the right part of use some shims.

edit: im thining about just getting shims, ugh fuck, i got this to eliminate slop on my shifter.... :(

            The part number you need is 25 11 7 501 309

BMA carries this one as well as the one you got.

Take a look at this page.

They are using this part number and it is the longer variety.

How about I leave it in for now with the selector rod out extended, and then just change the selector rod to a shorter kind? Can I do that easily with the driveshaft on? I have my driveshaft out and I wanna put it back on

You can do it (I have) but it's not easy, it's a lot of feeling around with your hands without being able to see what you are doing.

The selector rod would be more money than the joint.

It's not the selector rod being more money than the joint, it's that its gonna be a cost in addition to the joint, shit, guess I'll just wait and get the right joint if its gonna be hard to change the selector rod with the shaft in.

Can't you return the one you got originally? Explain that you need the other one, I'm sure they'd take it back.

Doing it with the driveshaft on is totally doable, it's just a little more difficult when you can't really see everything. I changed all the of the shift stuff with the shaft on, I just dropped the rear of the gearbox down when I did it.

You have GOT to be KIDDING!!!!??? I just did this on my 86 325 (eta) and getting that metal dowel pin in was a total BEEYOCH! :x There is like NO clearance or room and that was with the driveshaft OFF and the guibo removed.

I would really like to know how on earth you did this with the driveshaft on.

I too got the wrong size joint and the selector rod joint changed as of April 86 I believe. Patrick at BMA took good care of me with the new parts and was very helpful.

                      BTW
I installed the Z4 3.0 shifter and all new bushings etc. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Much MUCH shorter throws. Takes a bit more force, but easy to get used to, and not difficult.

I also changed my motor mounts at the same time and found that a HUGE improvement.

                      Brian.

Yeah I got the 2.5 Z4 SSK in there, Big difference, just the rod and shifter joint aren't flush now and I already put the driveshaft in, yes I agree its a bitch even with the driveshaft off!

So I'm just gonna get a new shift selector rod, I heard changing that gives upgraded shifting too.

As I said, it was a pain, but the key here is dropping the rear of the gearbox and experience.

                              how?

                              remove mounts.
                              drop tranny.
go by memory and touch and jam it in there somehow?
