    As I said, it was a pain, but the key here is dropping the rear of the gearbox and experience.

    drop tranny.
    go by memory and touch and jam it in there somehow?
    Sort of. With the rear of the gearbox lowered, you can see and feel enough to do it. Remove the shifter and that gives you some more room to see. I did it on a lift but I'm sure it could be done on jackstands too.
