    Rear end doesn't fit?

Hi all, I have a '91 318is and recently started hearing some noise from the rear of the vehicle. I wasn't positive if it was coming from the diff but I decided to start there (was looking to upgrade anyway). So I sourced out an open diff from a '97 318ti automatic. It was my understanding that this small case 4.44 rear end would bolt right up to my e30. Yesterday I got a call from my mechanic saying it doesn't fit. I called the seller of the diff and he assured me it came out of the car mentioned above. So I'm puzzled.

Am I wrong for assuming it should fit my car? Or was it a specific year of the 318ti that had a compatible rear end?

Is the seller lying to me?

Does my mechanic not know what he's doing? Or missing a part somewhere?

I'm out a lot of money at this point and just not sure what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes it will definitely fit. You may need to swap the flanges on the 318ti diff for some from a 6 cylinder E30. Not positive on that though.

Probably just has a different cover, which has the integral rear mount

I'm pretty sure you have to swap the diff cover and flanges
