Yes, there is an early and late Getrag 240.

The M10 powered 318i had a Getrag 240 with a bell housing appropriate for the M30/M10/S14/S38. This will not work with the M5x family of engines.

The M42 powered 318i and 318is (1990 and 1991) also had a Getrag 240, but the bell housing will bolt directly to an M5x engine, and it will be perfectly oriented with no tilt, and you can use the stock transmission crossmember.

I was also wondering about this since http://e30world.com/specifications/BMW-E30-specs-table shows that the 1990-91 318i have Getrag 260, yet several forums indicate that the 90-91 318i have Getrag 240.
