    CV axle replacement

I'm replacing the trans in my 86' 325e and dropped the exhaust and driveshaft. and noticed the CV boots are split open. Should I replace just the boots? or get new axles along with them? Should I buy new/used axles?

Anyone have a writeup saved on doing it?

Unless the half shafts are badly worn, replace the boots (and re-pack with grease) using the OE boot kits. New OE half shafts are quite pricey and remans are pretty iffy. There are some Pacific rim half shafts, but all that I've seen have the wrong outboard boots that rub on the shock. If your half shafts are worn, get some good replacements from a salvage yard and rebuild (boots and grease) yourself.

Thanks jlevie I saw how much they were and was scared I'd have to buy some. They don't look like they've been split too long so maybe the shafts will be okay. or at least I hope they are ;]

If the CV joints still have grease in them, a replacement of the boots and new grease is probably all that's needed. I only use the OE boots as I have found that the generic boots aren't the same and will rub on the shocks.
