    Blew up my differential

    Hey guys,

I blew up the diff my 84 m10. Now I need to get a new one. Are all E30 diffs going to swap right over or will I need to swap out the whole rear end? Reason I'm asking is there aren't many E30's up here in this part of Canada and even fewer m10's! I have found one guy who has 8 part cars, but they are all post-facelift and most have the LSD which I know mine doesn't currently have.

It is my understanding that the 4-bangers use what is known as a small-case differential. The 6-cylinder models use a medium case differential. Thus, you can swap over any small-case differential.

No need to change anything else. Bolt off old diff, bolt in new diff. Sounds simple, but those friggen bolts can be stuck pretty bad. Get some PB Blaster and start soaking the bolts a few days before you even try to get them off. That's my experience anyhow.

Yes, any E30 diff is interchangeable. I have a 3.73 LSD out of a late 325is in my M10 E30. Yours is a small case but the medium case fits just the same, the flanges are at the same place.

Just remember the ratios are different depending on the E30.

I have a 4.10 that is currently in the car with fairly new fluid that I would let go for 250 plus shipping if you are interested.

Edit: but seeing that you are in canada, it may be a quicker process for you to find one local.

if you come across a e28 (5 series) or e24 (6 series) diff, they will take a E30 6 cylinder cover and bolt on.

for some people its more avail than e30 diff (ratio, lsd, etc)

LSD is USEFUL !!! for snow, canada.
