Front half of driveshaft too short?

When replacing the clutch on my friend's e30 and we found that the driveshaft was about an inch short? We got it hooked up for temporary use but tonight the front bolts snapped off, so a solution is needed. When we hooked it up, both the csb and guibo were yanked to shit. we are going to source a new front half, but still a little confused as to what's wrong?

It sounds to me like the drive shaft has collapsed and the spline joint is stuck. Unscrew the collar nut and spray PBlaster on the splines until you can free them up and slide the front half of the driveshaft forward.

The drive shaft has to be balanced as a complete unit. You can't replace just one half without having the drive shaft rebalanced.

No, the splines are free, it was the first thing I checked. One half will have to do for now, the budget doesnt have room for balancing or both halves. I'm just concerned that the wrong front half was possibly used, as it appears to be physically shorter on only the front portion.

Presumably the drive shaft mated up to the transmission properly before the clutch replacement. If the spline that joins the halves of the driveshaft isn't stuck there has to be something else wrong. Take a good look at the motor mounts. If they have failed, the motor could have shifted forward during the clutch job.

Jlevie, thanks for the replies. We originally noticed the short driveshaft before taking the car apart. As I said, everything was hooked up, just stretched to shit. the motor mounts are brand new and seem to be in place. there is a lot extra spline showing at the midsection, and the guibo was stretched too, as well as the csb...which leads me to believe the front half of the shaft is the problem..

That makes me think that the car has the wrong drive shaft. It is possible that it is parts of two drive shafts, but it could be that a PO replaced the drive shaft and intalled the wrong one. I'd start looking for a replacement.

That's as we expected. We'll try it out this weekend and let you know how it plays out.
