just got my first e30, a few shifter related questions

Hey all,

New to e30s but not to cars. I sure don't mind getting my hands dirty.

Let's begin:

1) side to side is smooth, but forward and back is VERY very stiff
2) side to side travel seems extreme. Going into reverse I actually hit the center console

Never done much work on RWD transmissions so any ideas are much appreciated! :)

I'm not super experienced with these, but it sounds like shifter bushings are worn out.
