Rattle coming from trans and hard shift from first to second..

Last fall I replaced the clutch, slave cylinder, master cylinder, and throw out bearing. With in the last few days I have noticed a rattling sound coming from the trans it goes away as soon as I depress the clutch, so my first guess is the throw out bearing is going out again. What could cause a recently new throw out bearing to fail this soon?

Ive also got this issue where if I try to shift quickly from first to second it won't go into gear. It feels like there is a wall or something blocking the shift lever.. Could these two issues be related or caused by the same thing? I'm really not looking forward to pulling the trans again. Also I installed the uuc short shifter kit last year, I believe it was the 20% reduction one not the 40%.

Is the rattle only present when the transmission is in neutral? If so you are probably hearing rattle from the input shaft. But if the rattle is present whent he car is in gear and moving, the TO bearing is suspect.

Worn syncro's in the transmission will make it diffifult to shift quickly. Sometimes replacing the transmission fluid can help. I like Redline MTL.

As far as I can tell its only when the car is in neutral. What would I replace to cure this rattle?

The transmission input shaft bearings, which really isn't a DIY.

My car is doing the very same thing ! The rattling noise goes away as soon as I depress the clutch. Did you figure out why was wrong ?

Oy! I was going to change my TO bearing next week for a similar rattle and I hadn't even considered a problem inside the trans. I don't hear the noise when I'm driving but normal engine and drivetrain noise is loud enough to drown it out I would think. Maybe I should find a used G260 as a standby when I pull mine. Should I expect to be able to feel the bad bearings by hand with the trans on the ground: play in the input shaft, crunchy bearings, etc.?

If the input shaft bearings are really bad, you'll be able to tell once the transmission is out. On the other hand, the shaft can feel just fine and still rattle when in neutral with the clutch engaged. A lightweight flywheel will make this problem much more noticeable.

Mild input shaft rattle is not harmful, though it might be annoying. A slightly thicker transmission fluid may calm it down.

Sounds like the same problem you're having. I don't however have a hard shift from first to second. Just the knocking noise. Basically a friend of mine who's a long time BMW mechanic told me to run gear oil in it and not worry about it. Like jlevie mentioned. I put Toyota synthetic ATF fluid in it because it has a slow leak and that's what we had laying around the shop. I plan on going back with 80/90 gear oil this saturday.
