That is an oil escape for seepage past the seal. The input shaft is way above the oil level in the transmission, so the seal just keeps oil that splashes around from getting out. The oil escape is intended to keep any seepage away from clutch, where it would cause problems.That sucks. Your are just the person I was looking for to ask this as well:
What is the purpose of the oil groove on the inside mating surface of the shaft seal cover? I think it corresponds to a hole on the inner bellhousing. Is this meant to feed oil that makes it past the seal back into the tranny? Why is oil getting past the seal anyway?
Make sure the vent at the top of the transmission isn't plugged. If it is pressure will build inside the transmission and force oil past the seal. When the vent is working, the usual cause of leaking at a shaft seal is simply a worn out seal. But if the shaft has a groove worn in it and the seal is seated such that it rides on the grove even a new seal will leak. A grooved shaft can fixed with a repair sleeve without having to tear down the transmission.Leave a comment:

If it was leaking before from the input seal, you'll not find out if it leaks until the transmission is back in service.Leave a comment:

Tranyy out to replace seals..how to test for leaks?
My tranny is currently out to replace a leaky input shaft seal/cover. How can I test it for leaks accurately before I throw it back in? Is simply refilling it enough, or do i need to turn the gears by cranking the output flange around? I cant exactly pick this thing up and shake it around..
I'd hate to put it all back in and have it leak AGAIN.Tags: None
