when i take my foot off the gas. vibration and humming in rear

just started today. when i take my foot off the gas i can feel a vibration and a loud humming from the rear. i would suspect the diff? the po really beat the hell out of this car. all is good when i have my foot on the gas. its a 3.73 lsd. 325i with 250000 on it. thanks

Perhaps a CV axel or Wheel bearing?-

you can check via wiggling them all when car in air:

-hug tire with both arms and wiggle side to side to see if there is play in the wheel bearing.

-wiggle half shaft axel and see if there is play in either CV or inboard outboard slop, I recently replaced a noisy CV.

-wiggle driveshaft at front and rear section to check its center bearing and the diff pinion. Diff pinon bearings go out and the front flange will have play in it if badly worn, driveshaft center bearing takes a poo often as well. Also Guibo

If your car has been abused with 250k miles it would make sense that any / all may be dying.

I recently found a bad axel to be cause of my driveline noise, would make a clunk on lift off or engage of throttle and whining, I was pondering between driveshaft, diff and both CV's and finally found the left one defective when its side to side half shaft play was excessive and causing a clunk noise when engaged.

From the outside the CV appeared fine as both boots were still intact, even with drifting the CV sustained no damage - noise drove me nuts though.

Wheel bearings usually make noise regardless of accell/decell. My diff made noise only in neutral when there was no load on it. I still suspect it's the diff

I'd definitely vote for the diff. You can always put the rear of the car on jackstands and run it. See if you can replicate the noise.

any answers on this problem?? I have the EXACT same symptoms... I have replaced CSB, Guibo, and made sure the alignment of the U-joints is correct... I am going to spin the differential input flange 180deg to see if anything changes...

Waste of your time; nothing will change.

Time to rebuild your diff with new bearings AND Bearing races.
