    Side Loading diff. Question

    Anyone have experience with these?

I realize E30s didn't come with them and that I should probably be posting on an E12 or 24 site but...I don't feel like registering on one atm.

Can someone tell me what the hell the vent/filter deal is on this diff?

It looks like a filter off the vent that then recirculates into the fill or drain hole.

    Is this feature common?

That does look like an oil separator. I don't think I've ever seen one like that before.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

      Interesting.

Forgive my ignorance but whats the purpose behind an oil separator on the diff?

Track car only kinda thing I'm guessing?

The purpose of an oil separator would be to trap oil and return it to the differential while still allowing venting of the differential. The only place I've ever seen one used has been on race cars.

          I've seen these on trucks.

It's like an oil catch can for your diff.

It could just be a Foam separator, Helps keep air pockets out of the oil while mixing. or a small Oil cooler???

what chassis / vintage did this come out of?

also, is it a LSD unit? if you pull the cover you will be able to see. perhaps it could be to prevent foaming @ Wangan speed on autobahn, or for a larger body weight car?
