oil + clutch =? clutch slipping? (lots of pictures inside)

    Hi,
lately i got this irritating shudder / chattering whenever i pressed the gas pedal.
my first guess was clutch's slipping.
although it was only several years old and had less than 100K km on it.

when i took the gear off i notice a massive oil leak from the seal of inside the bell housing. the one behind the guide of the strange bearing...

this is how the clutch looked like when i took it off the car:

now, looking at it - it doesnt looks like it was done, or is it?
also, i could notice this glaze that started on it:

now, compering the old clutch plate to the new one discovere's that they're almost the same thickness - could it be that the oil leak killed my clutch?

as for the clutch mass - looking at it - it also has strange colors / glazing -
could this be also because of the slipping?

this is the new clutch mass:

i was expecting to see dead clutch, with no remains on the clutch pads, but from how it looks like right now, can i guess that it was ok, and the only thing that mess things up was the oil?

plus, the bolts that holds the clutch was also ruined, i guess the previous owner didnt spend much on tools, where can i get new clutch bolts?

p.s. the car is a 1990 318IS with DASC installed.

    thanks

    Ron.

Replace rear main seal, replace input shaft seal on your gearbox, inspect input shaft bearing play, replace spigot bearing and machine the flywheel before installing the new clutch.

Looking at your old pressure plate I'd say that there has been a lot of heat put into it which would give you a shudder when engaging and disengaging the clutch.

      Can you elaborate a little?

rear main seal on engine side? - it looks like everything on the engine side is fine, no leaks, no free-play.
the engine is early 1996 M42 engine, not the original 1990 M40

input shaft seal - the one behind the throw bearing sleeve?

input shaft free-play - there is a play on the shaft of the gearbox, the one that connects to the engine, how can i tell if it is excessive play or normal?

what is the spigot bearing? (it sounds like a made-up word :) )

flywheel also looks ok, i will sand it manually as i rather not have it removed - i only took the trans. off the car, not the whole engine-trans together, and i hate all the oil that will spill if i take the flyewheel off....

Oil won't spill out when you remove the flywheel. If it has a similar appearance as the pressure plate you need to remove the flywheel and have it surfaced.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

agree with Jlevie. There is enough discoloration and hard spots on that pressure plate to tell that it got HOT from slipping. If the flywheel looks like that you need to get it resurfaced to remove the glazing, hopefully eliminate most of the hard spots (causes chattering) and also you will be able to tell then if there are any heat checks (read cracks) in the flywheel. any of the above conditions can cause problems with the installed clutch, and in the case of heat checking, can be dangerous (if the cracks spread, the flywheel can shatter)
