    86 ES transmission to 89 i engine?

hey guys I was just wondering if I would be able to use the transmission from an 86 325es on my 89 325i (auto to manual swap) I think that the 86 was a getrag 260 but i just want to confirm that it will work before pulling the trigger on the swap. Thanks in advance for the help. Also the drive shaft on the donor car looks like it is in fairly good condition, Is there anything I should change out on the drive shaft while its off the car?

You can use that transmission, but you will need to use the driveshaft and shifter from the donor car.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

awesome thanks for the info. While I have everything out I would also like to do an SSK setup but the one from blunttech only fits 87 and up. would you have any recommendations for a different one that would work with the 86 trans? or do you think the blunttech SSK would still work with the 86 G260?

your shifter will work. you may need to buy a bracket but check this thread for year difference. the driveshaft will work if it is the same size guibo/tranny output shaft. check this thread out....

As I mentioned in the post linked by jw 325ic, I see that the ETA transmission bellhousing types switched up between the early and late ETA in the post. Early is deep, late is shallow.

If I'm wrong I'll edit both this post and my post in the linked thread. Thanks.

EDIT: OK, I've read a few of your other posts and you seem to have confirmed that you're write-up is correct. I'm going to have to measure myself for good measure.

i've edited my g260 thread (official tranny thread) a little bit tonight. check it out for a little more info/references/reasoning. i'm glad i was able to help some of you! i found a bit of info on the m5x/s5x swaps and what clutch/throwouts etc to use and will update that section too. been a bit busy on my parents e34 lately...
