    Transmission Fluid change

    Hey guys,

I'm trying to change the tranny fluid, but I can't find an Allen key that is large enough to take out the two plugs.

What are those, like 17mm!? I can't find a key that huge...

You might have toruble finding an allen wrench that large, but a good auto parts house will have or can get an allen driver for a socket wrench.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Kay, well. Canadian Tire, Parts Source, APC Parts and a couple jobbers did not have it.

usually you need the tool from pelican parts and a compressed (small) 1/2 socket to squeeze in there. the sockets from the auto parts stores are going to be way too long. you could shave it down if you wanted though and save some money i suppose. http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/...ONLY%2C%20Each

I use a hex socket in 17mm, but I've seen a big ass hex key used before. All have been done with the transmission off the car though. Guess I'm no help. Might be easiest just to order one online.

Something like this would be too big?

Sears allen keys were perfect for removing the transmission drain plugs from my Getrag G260. Thanks!

Since this is back up, I'll add that you can cut a 17mm bolt, leaving about an inch of shoulder, and clamp it in some big ass vice-grips too. Or, if you have a welder handy you can make something more permanent.

I used a 17mm allen socket and a 17mm open wrench. Put the allen key in and use the crescent part of the wrench to turn it, it has enough clearance from the transmission to the base of the allen socket for the wrench to slide in.

You can make one for free with a 17mm bolt and 2 nuts... (this one isn't 17mm but you get the point) If you want to loosen use the inside nut, if you want to tighten use the outside nut, Have fun!
