How to Remove Early Model Shift Linkage

    Hey,

So i found out i need a new shifter and i got the part, it is for a late model though. I have an 86 325e. The early models had an arm and i was wondering if i had to remove the trans or drop the trans to get it out?

    Thanks

you don't have to drop the transmission to replace the shifter, arm, bushings, etc. It's tight but you can do it.

Dropping/Removing the trans makes removing the bitch pin easier.

Put a jack under the transmission and drop the mounts to make life easier.

I've done it with the trans and driveshaft installed, and found it would have been faster to pull the front half of the driveshaft and drop the trans some.

Before you get into it, put the trans in 2nd gear. This will pull the selector rod out farther and make it a little easier to get the pin out.
