Transplant an auto tranny into a e36?

I happen to have a nice transmission out of an 87eta.

    Buddy has a 94 318i with a bad transmission.

Can I use the transmission in my basement? How easy a task would this be?
West German BMWs, they just don't make the same as they did before the wall fell.
^Case in point: Auto-Repair Technology. Everytime my car isn't starting or acting up I let it sit, sometimes for an hour, sometimes for days. But it eventually fixes itself.

be a bit of a pain in the ass. First off, the driveshafts are totally different lengths, and you will likely have a hell of a time finding one the correct length. Second, the M42 has the same installed angle as an M50, so you will be kicked over on the trans (pan not level). Last of all the E36 uses an electronic transmission. the Eta uses a cable actuated kickdown system. You would need to figure out a bracket for this to work correctly.

Not to say it cant be done, but is probably not worth the effort to go through.

Yeah I thought it might be more simple than that... oh well.

On a side note I thought most people that do an m50 swap use their orig getrag.

we do, but a 10 degree difference on a manual wont expose the pickup the way it may in an auto..... I contemplated the 4hp22 with an m50 swap and abandoned it due to these issues
