Clutch pedal slack?

There is a good 1"-2" space at the top of the clutch pedal where there is no resistance. The clutch pedal sits farther ahead than the brake pedal. My question is, is this normal? how can I adjust this?

I know what a bad slave/ master cylinder feels like and its not that.

I'm having what seems to be an identical problem, however I just assumed it was my master cylinder. How do you know that it's not your cylinder? I'm not challenging your knowledge, I just want to find out how to differentiate between crappy clutches, ha.
