    Shifting problems following love tap

So I got distracted and tapped an Audi TT in the rear bumper at about 5mph the other day. He was going, then he wasn't, I was distracted by someone honking next to me, blah blah blah, I ran into the mofo.

No visible damage to the E30, but i was in 1st with my hand on the shifter and I believe some of my weight got thrown against it. Now the car doesn't want to stay in reverse, 1st, 3rd, or 5th - it'll go there if I guide it and keep my hand on it, but it won't stay, and there's no "gate" feeling. Also, I have to push the shifter until it hits the plastic console surrounding it before it'll engage the gear. This, as you may imagine, is getting irritating.

I've got limited time to deal with this. Any ideas on what I most likely bent or broke? I've done a lot of work to the car but not gotten into the shift mechanism yet.

i would take out the center console and look to see if there is any visible damage under the boot... also a collision on 5mph can cause damage internally to any car and it is really hard to detect... start simple and dig deeper into it as you go along.... a good place to start would be right under the center console.

what did the guy in the TT say... i bet he was pissed!!!

Gotta do that tonight, as I went over a bump today and the shifter made an awful noise and fell over to the left and stuck in second gear. Motor/tranny mount perhaps? I'll get under there this weekend.

The TT guy was the nicest guy in the world about it, actually. He did stop very suddenly, it probably wasn't a big surprise that the guy behind him wasn't as quick...

Well, finally got a chance to get underneath the car this morning. All 4 mounts are broken...;) the motor's sitting a little to the left and about 3/4 inch forward of normal. That'd do it...also, it's making the exhaust rub on its hole in the rear valance. Time to go fix some motor mounts.

Just the mounts. They probably had never been replaced - who knows, some might have been broken or breaking already. The top metal plates just sheared off the rubber parts. Having trouble tracking any down this weekend, so I took the old ones off and now the car's on stands in the driveway just waiting....:)

Your local parts store should have one that will work. While doing an engine swap, we discovered that there is a generic mount that is exactly the same as an e30 one. Just go in and ask what they have. Take the old one so you can compare.

your a fucking moron... there is no 'generic mounts' for anything out there that is just asking for trouble if you buy cheap shit like that!!! if it says its universal it is just bad news... but you would know that since you work in a parts store and you've seen people replace OEM equipment with universal stuff and then you've seen their vehicle more dicked up then it was b4 right!!?

i am an ASE certified parts specialist... i think i know what the fuck i am talking about!

you said that you didn't carry bmw products and that's not what he said. he was talking universal and you responsed as if he said bmw. hence, you suck at reading comprehension.

if you wanted to recommend not buying parts that aren't made to fit on the car, say that, but don't respond to something that wasn't said like you can't read.

At NAPA here, they have a book of misc parts with a section that was only motor mounts. The had atleast 25 different mounts that would fit numerous cars. Basically aftermarket mounts, but same quality/design as stock. The had one that was exactly like an e30 mount. If you don't beleieve me, ask Eurospeed88. It was on his car. Jordan was there also.
