    Getrag 240 options

    Dear forum,

I have an 84' 318i and the tranny is starting to go... the gears dont like each other especially when its cold and the clutch is getting a bit slippery. My friend has an m42 parts car and i was wondering if i could swap his tranny in for mine? is this doable or is there some difference?

    Any help appreciated,
    Thanks!

No, they will not interchange. You'll need one from an M10 car.

Mr. 325, would you care to explain why to Mr. Skittles? He's got a fairly big problem on his hands, and an unsupported 'no' seems a little unfair to the time and money he could be wasting on this problem.

At first I checked realoem and pelican parts, and it lists one of the transmission numbers as working with the M10 and M42 models, but then again it also says that tranny will work with the S52 and M60 (which may not be a stretch, since 240s are supposed to work with M50 swaps). The part number for this tranny is 23001222035, or the Getrag 240/5.62-TBCU.

I searched the web and found another thread, where another user said that the early and later 240s have different bellhousing bolt patterns. This seems to be the case. The tranny driveshafts are the same, however, and you might be able to swap the transmission housing from one to the other, just make sure you're careful to not let the gearing fall apart while you're doing the swap.

This image is a decent guide to show you how the housing's attached:

Again, check the bellhousing bolt patterns first to see if they're the same, that would make it a lot easier.

Finally, are you sure your old transmission just doesn't need a fluid change? Doing that could make it run like new again, and changing your clutch once the transmission is out is pretty much cake. Also, I've been typing all of this assuming you have a manual transmission. I hope that's the case.

M10 uses the same bolt pattern as the M30 large six, M42 uses the same pattern as the M20 (albeit rotated), and M50 series engines. in short, the M42 transmission will not bolt up to the M10 that the OP has in his car. The G240 does not use a removable/interchangable bellhousing, so he is kinda shit outta luck....

Well NO was the correct answer, that's why I posted it. Thank you for your life advice though.
