325e diff output flange pops out

I finally picked up another e30, and I've been doing some research on this matter but I wanted to get some second opinions on it.

Essentially, during slow turns the car makes a lot of noise coming from the right rear. I tested wheel bearings, calipers, and changed the diff fluid. While doing all of the normal diagnostics I noticed that if I pulled the half shaft towards the tire the output flange comes out a little bit, approx 1" if I tug hard. I figure the snap ring is either no longer there or it is not functioning properly. It's really the only thing I can imagine that would allow the output flange to slide out.

I'd like to make sure I have everything prepared before I delve into this, as it's likely to take some time.

87 325e, the diff is the limited slip.

    Thoughts?

The output flanges pop out fairly easily, there is no snap ring holding them in. Sounds like you may have a problem with the CV axle.

Oh, wow...mhmm...that's interesting. I'm not entirely sure how the CV axle would be causing the problem, to be honest. There's nothing at all that keeps the output flange into the diff?

        Perhaps shims are needed?

Actually there is a snap ring.

Check part number 9. My output shafts were hard to pull out I had to use a pry bar with moderate force.
