    Shift linkage??

Is there a difference in shift linkage in the eta and the i motors?? I just swapped to an m20 out of an i and using eta shift linkage. My shifter is hitting the center consul... Idk if its my short shifter that is causing the problem or the linkage is too short. I came from an m42

The 84-Mid 86 Eta shifters are the early style sheetmetal consoled. Mid-86 and newer stick shift 6 cylinder cars all had the same basic setup with very minor differences.

M42 shift carrier and selector rod are different than any 325e/i parts.

I'm not sure what years the ETA shiftlinkage i'm using is out of but it looks similar to my m42 set up but way shorter. I'm just assuming that it's not supposed to be hitting my center console

Then you're using the right shift linkage. You're using the Eta shift carrier and selector rod, right?

Do you mean the shift lever itself? Because that could make sense.

Unclip the actual shift lever from the selector rod, rotate the shift lever 180 degrees, reconnect and test.

            Yup.
I always refer to the rod that goes between the lever, and the transmission as the shift/transmission linkage, and the shift lever as the gear selector rod.
That can be very confusing. Sorry. My bad on the poor wording.
