Is it open or limited slip?

I just found the diff I had purchased from GMW a couple years back. (We've got 2 parts cars in the basement).

I read the plate, from what I could see it said "4.10 8852"

when I spun the one halfshaft though, the other spun in the same direction. I thought this was an LSD characteristic.

    is it lsd or open?

Usually that indicates that the differential is a limited slip. If it's open the other wheel spins the opposite direction.

Hold the input shaft steady while you turn it and see if they still go the same way.
