E30 clutch makes me FURIOUS! RAWR!

    Help my sanity..

Ever since I got the car, the clutch has never worked 'correctly'. You could get into gear a couple times no problem, and drive it but the pedal would go lower and lower with each push. Eventually, you would need to pull the clutch pedal back up and start the process all over.

After talking with others, I thought the Master Cylinder was dead. So I swapped another supposedly good MC and bled the system. This seemed to help - sorta. The next morning I came out, and there was fluid all over the footwell.. Looks like the seal was bad on this Master Cylinder. So it was rebuild the other MC time!

I rebuilt the other MC with a kit I bought a while back (which exchanges the stock aluminum piston and spring for just a plastic piston) and reinstalled it along with a refurbed slave cylinder. Rebled the system, and even tried reverse bleeding it, but the same issue, in fact even worse, pedel won't return, and can't get it into gear AT ALL.

The return spring on the clutch pedal appears to be fine (it goes over-center and will force the pedal all the way out, or fully against the floor board when not. Unfortunately, the rebuild kit didn't fill me with confidence since the rod and clevis tend to 'popout' of the piston rather easily.

I am at my whits end.. any suggestion (or anyone had similar issues?)

I had the same problem with my clutch, I just ended up rebuilding the Master cylinder and everything worked after that, I think buying a new one couldd help but maybe the line is messed up in between both cylinders? or could your clutch not be sliding properly on the input shaft of the trans? that's where I wouldn't be much help

As much as I like the "Throw more parts at it" approach (which I still may just buy one to have on the shelf), I had already rebuilt one Master Cylinder, and had swapped between two different hard and soft lines (the upper and lower section of the clutch hydraulic lines.

I am REALLY hoping you are not on to something Yeaseth, but I got a bad feeling you may be heading me in the right direction..

Lets see what happens tonight! (I may be needing a new windshield if it goes poorly..)

You can keep messing with this or fix it. My solution would be an FTE master cylinder, soft line, and slave cylinder. FTE is the OE supplier and those parts will run about $130 from RM European.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Ended up buying a Master Cylinder tonight anyways, the soft line is new, and I bought a new slave earlier this week. We'll see how it goes..

Make sure you ONLY use Dot4 fluid Masters and Slaves can go out fairly often/easily. I have had a couple defective new items

Just an update on this; It was answer "D", none of the above..

After some time tearing everything apart, it seems that my Firewall had cracked between the two holes that the two clutch lines pass through, and the entire pedal assembly had split in half!

While it sucked to repair (required some welding and reenforcing) at least I know it wasn't a failure on my abilities to rebuild the Master Cylinder (it worked fine) or bleed the system that worked fine as well..)

will post pix in case anyone gives a $hit.
