    Lightening stock M20 flywheel.. Worth it?

    So guys I broke a motor mount the other day so Im using it as an excuse to pull my motor to do a refresh, clutch, and a bunch of other things.

    So while Im in there I was wondering if I should lighten my flywheel while its at the machine shop.

    Is it worth it? Or should I just get an aftermarket flywheel?

    If it is worth it, anybody know of a place that will do it on the SF bay area?

        Yes if the price is right and not too light (about 12-14lbs is good).

          Stock M20 single mass weighs ~18.5 lbs. Machine shops will charge per hour. Mine ended up being 75 for the resurface, 70 for an hour to take the weight down to 15 lbs, and 30 to balance it. They took most of the ring off the back of the flywheel. Even though the static weight of the flywheel only changed by 3.5 lbs, the effect it has on acceleration will be greater than what the final figure suggests since the weight was removed from the outer radius of the flywheel.

          I could go either way if I could do it again, I think getting the stocker down below 13 lbs would start to get into the cost range of where getting a new aftermarket unit would make sense (based on the rates for the shop I took mine to). The benefit of some aftermarket flywheels is the replaceable friction surface.

            I took off the outer ring as well. My machinist turned it down flush with the lip before the teeth. Mine ended up being 13.5 lbs I think.. I believe I payed 60 to turn it and 40 to balance it. I haven't used it yet but I'm sure it will increase throttle response and feel worth the $100 invested.

              I was able to score a euro 323 FW for cheaper than it was to machine down my stock one, so I went that route. I can say that it is noticeable, the engine does rev easier. It's kind of hard to describe, but things feel smoother afterwards. I say do it.

                Thanks, the wheels in my sig are Rotiform BLQs. 17x8 +20 No longer have them.

                Sounds like something I'm gonna do while the motors out. I'll start shopping around some machine shops and see how much it'll come out to.

                Hopefully somebody can chime in with some info on a machine shop that's local.
