    Transmission output flange NEED HELP

Was about to do my shifter bushings and I have to take off the output flange I got the locking plate out and now when I try and break the nut free the flange spins with the nut (extremely hark to turn) and it's I'm gear do it shouldn't be spinning. I haven't taken an impact to it yet and I know that there isn't loctited because my buddy did it previously and didn't use any. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks guys

with the transmission in gear, the flange should not be spinning. I have always had the transmission out of the car when removing the output flange so I always stick it in a vice to keep it from spinning. This avoids the potential of breaking gear teeth as the impacts directly go into the gears when using the transmission in gear method. I would fabricate a lever arm bolted to the output flange instead of putting the transmission in gear. I have seen this done by a couple of 2002 guys

What size socket do you need for the output flange nut?
Our Lady of Blessed Acceleration, don't fail me now.

It's a 30mm. I bought an axle nut socket and then had to turn it on the lathe so that the OD of the socket would fit inside of the flange to reach the nut.

Well that was bizarre. I was ready to do a tranny swap when I realized that the flange is the wrong size so I jumped on the forum to verify the socket size and this thread is the top thread. Thanks seatown88 for happening to give just the answer I was looking for before I even asked it!
