it depends what your after? if you want a diff to give more "go" the higher the better. if you can find a 4.4 then id go with that. im not sure if they make 4.4 lsd's though.

also a small case will fit for sure. but should be also be able to get a medium case (188mm) to fit straight bolt in.

more available in good ratios are e36 318ti diffs. they are a direct fit and often come in 3.9 and 4.1 ratios and sometimes a 4.4. but very rare to find them in lsd.

I believe the US M10 318i cars had a small case 3.91 differential, somebody correct me if I am wrong.

Your best bet and easiest diff to find is going to be a medium case 3.73 or 4.10 LSD.

Damn, I'll have to double check which diff my car has then!

I don't know much about the M10 318i as I've never had to care about them before. LOL

                  in usa 3.45, 3.64, 3.91, 4.10, 4.45 is all avail in the 168mm natively. e30/36

LSD units are pretty fragile, the top cap can fracture - the 188mm unit is much more common and interchanges with the 168 - the halfshafts may be different if a m10 car, m42 cars share halfshafts w/ m20 cars

It was a 4.44, and it only came in the 95 318ti automatic. I had an LSD one that I sold with my e30. In 96 they went to DSC and the diffs were open.

doesn't seem right. I've never heard of an LSD coming stock in an m10 318. And isn't the tag in the wrong spot? I'm not sure you have what you think you have, unless it was replaced by your PO.

It is possible it is not original to the car but that is where the tag is on small case diffs. Im not sure what the build sheets looked like back then but it may have been optioned.
