    Open to LSD (internal swap)

Here's my question. What I need to convert my 3.73 open diff to a LSD ?

I see you coming with: Buy one, it's easier !

I know but here in Québec I have a hard time to find one at a fair price. A BMW specific scrap yard coted me 750$ for a used 3.73 LSD. Freaking crazy IMO !!! And E30s are almost impossible to find in pick and pull yards.

Buying one from the states would cost me a lot in shipping so this is why I'm asking this question.

What parts I need to convert it and are they easy to find or it's almost impossible ?

    Thanks !

you need the whole LSD pumpkin. The ring gear from your open diff bolts to it and the whole assembly drops into your diff casing.

You will have to "set up" the differential in order to properly install the LS unit. The bearing preload and side-to-side ring gear position are set by shim stock. There should already be a shim on each side of the differential side plates. But this may change with the installation of the LSD. Probably not a whole bunch, but you'll have to use gear marking compound to be certain. BMW still sells shim packs.

            Thinner set: 33 13 9 065 734
            Thicker set: 33 13 9 065 735

The fore-aft pinion-to-ring clearance is set by a shim in the case. You probably won't have to fool with this.
