When I shift from 2nd to 3rd or 4th into 3rd it will grind or pop out at most speeds. When I go from 2nd into 3rd at a slow speed, maybe like 25mph and at like 2-2.5k rpm and hold it into 3rd, I can feel a pop in the shifter and it will get into 3rd gear, I can get into 3rd almost every single time if I do this and hold the shifter so it can get into 3rd. There is some play in the shifter, like when it is in any gear I can move the shifter left and right a little. I'm trying to figure out if this third gear problem is the transmission or the shift linkage bushing or something. Has anyone ever experienced this problem?

the play you are feeling in the shifter is quite normal. even with brand new oem bmw bushes there is some movement. its a poor design really. to remedy that look at uuc and a few others have redesigned the shifter linkages to fix this.
but i think your problem is the sincromesh for 3rd has taken a hammering and is worn out.
if you dont know what the sincro is. its basicly a guide (not exactly 100% correct but works for what im tryn to explain) as the internal gears need to mesh together between drives, the sincro makes sure the gear teeth line up 100%. if the sincros wear out then they dont line up properly. and you have trouble getting gears into mesh. as they are turning and at different speeds this makes it harder for you as the driver to line them up unless you are very in touch with your car and its gears and there different speeds. if you are you could change smooth without using your clutch. -
sounds like your transmission synchro is worn out. It seems like the 3rd gear synchro is the first to wear out.Comment

You bearing is toast and your countershaft/axle/whateveryoucallit inside your transmission is unaligned.
Time for a new trans. Pick one up and ride this one till it dies.
"I can feel a pop in the shifter and it will get into 3rd gear, I can get into 3rd almost every single time if I do this"
Then one night on an empty street, I dropped the clutch and floored the shit out of it. As soon as I slammed second, kaboom! The transmission died. That was a good laugh.

Could be an issue with the tranny or the mounts/bushings
My .02
It probably worn and you need new mounts and bushings regardless.
Change the shift bushings (go with derlin bushings for the one that mounts on the pin on the top of the trans. Takes out a lot of factory slack) change your trany and engine mounts.
Worst case you still need a new tranny in which case I'd still recommend replacement parts anyways so its worth a try.

Bad motor and transmission mounts are a problem as are worn shifter bushings. Replace those and it it helps. If it doesn't the shifter fork in the transmission is worn and it needs to be rebuilt or replaced. The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
