I drained the ATF out of the trans and removed the sump. The ATF was very BLACK and the magnets were covered in a fine metallic dust, but at least there were no chunky bits laying in the sump.

My next plan was to check that the filter isn't clogged. I managed to remove 2 of the 3 Torx bolts, but the last one stripped.:x I f'n hate Torx! Now I gotta get a bolt extractor.
Wondering if it's possible for a clogged filter to prevent the trans from shifting?
