    Clutch diagnosis

So I've never replaced my clutch and yesterday it stopped working. I dont know exactly what the culprit may be, but there was no obvious change in pedal feel and no vibration, just took a dump out of the blue.

It will still go into gear when the car is off, and when it is in gear, it runs great(cant change gears though).

The only thing I have always noticed since I bought the car is when the car was out of gear running at idle, there was a certain really fast clunking noise, and that would go away when I depressed the clutch all the way down.

I'm a noob at clutches, whats the first thing I should check?

    Thanks r3v

This happening with no warning or prior symptoms could mean that it is a problem with the clutch hydraulics. Because the odds are that both are original, I always replace the clutch master and slave at the same time. I'd do that before I dropped the transmission and replaced the clutch.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

What jlevie said, but the noise youre hearing is likely the throw out bearing rubbing the pressure plate wrong. ie replace the TOB

the clunking noise sounds like the normal getrag rattle.

It was a really low almost inaudible rotary clunk. One had to really listen to hear it.

Sounds like normal getrag rattle...change to a ltw flywheel and it sounds like marbles.

            Agreed with above.

            Replace the clutch hydraulics

            Clutch master
            Slave
Line that runs from master to slave
And line that runs from brake Res to master

Heck I'd go a step further and replace the brake master cylinder and flush the brake lines.

Not required but while your in there...

Does the pedal return? If you push it to the floor and start the car in gear does it move?
